In this write-up, I am discussing a song from ‘English Babu Desi Mem’ (1996). Though the song structurally belongs to Sufi qawwali genre, it is blended with a very impressive dance performance by a group of dancers. I have already given the story of the film in detail in this article which appeared on the Blog a few days back. So, I give below only the gist of the story to recapitulate the background.

Today’s song is a qawwali from a Bilingual film – Kalakar-1954.
This was a film made in 2 languages-Hindi and Marathi. The film was made by Datta Dharmadhikari, for his own banner Alhad Chitra, poona. (Alhad was his son’s name).
When talkie films started, it also prompted the Marathi producers to make films in Hindi and Marathi, in order to capture the bigger All India market and to make more money. The very first Marathi Talkie film ‘ Ayodhyecha Raja ‘-1932 was also made in Hindi as ‘ Ayodhya ka Raja ‘at the same time. So, in this game of Bilinguals Marathi films were ahead of Bengali films, whose first Bilingual came out much later.
