Her name is listed as the fourth lady music director in Hindi cinema. But then, that is where the comparison ends. The first three names considered are Ishrat Sultana, better known as Bibbo, then Jaddan Bai, and then we have Khorshed Minocher-Homji, more popularly known as Saraswati Devi. These stalwart composers from the earlier decades (1930s and 40s) of Indian cinema, were formally trained in Hindustani classical music, which also defined their style and the types of songs they composed.

Today, 13th August is the birthday of Sridevi, as she turns 54.

For this celebration, here is a wonderful dance song performed by her, from the film ‘Jaag Utha Insaan’ (1984). The setting for the song is a stage performance, likely at a religious function. On stage, Sridevi is accompanied by Mithun Chaktravarty playing the flute and Beena signing the vocals. We also see Sudhir Dalvi, sitting next to Beena. In the audience we can see Yunus Parvez, sitting in the chair right up front, Sujeet Kumar and Kaanan Kaushal sitting  in the audience, Rakesh Roshan and Deven Verma, standing at the back, with Somayaajulu making an entry, while the program is in progress.

This article is the 13400th song post in the blog.

Have you ever wondered. . .

how a song gets constructed?

and why a song is termed as a tip of the iceberg?

You must now be thinking – this is a peculiar but a very interesting intro to the 134th century post on the blog. So yes, before getting into the discussion on the proposed topic, congratulations are in order. Welcome all to the 13 thousand 4 hundredth post on our blog. The musical bandwagon rolls on – toiling, pleasing, emotionally invigorating – it continues to move tirelessly. Because. . . because music – must be there. The world, this nature – all are moving to a rhythm, and a melody. Music is instilled in everything every entity we know, we touch, we think of. But come to think of it, we do not often think of this world that way i.e. music in everything, everyday of our lives. We are so consumed with the process of existence and living day to day, that we forget to stop and smell the flowers (or smell the coffee, if you are in America). And the music of life gets hidden behind the other sundries. Often we forget to think about it.

Today (30 june 2017) is the birth anniversary of Kalyanji (30 june 1928-24 august 2000 ) of the well-known Kalyanji-Anandji music composer duo. Or K-A, in short. I’ve written here on the occasion of the anniversary of several artistes. Composers, lyricists, actors, directors.  In fact most of my posts here are to do with some occasion or the other.

जब मैं छोटा बच्चा था, (and my, not just then. . . even now). . .

No, no I am not going to start a description of my ‘शरारती’ pranks and naughtiness. I am going to tell somethings about my favorite actor and songs; that my favorite male performer was Dev Anand. There was a charismatic attraction in his face, his smile with one out of line canine, his mannerism, and his style of dialogue delivery – all put together made for a striking package,  that would steal hearts. I am talking of the time when films like ‘Baazi’ and ‘Jaal’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ continued to be popular in re runs, and continued to be discussed as iconic films. This popular set of films was shown more than once on TV, and it would be a gala Saturday/Sunday when a Dev Anand film was scheduled. Those were days when the weekly film shows were split across the two last days of the week. And needless to say, the break was very irritating. 🙂
