Today’s song is the Title song from the film Chameli ki shaadi-1986.
This is one of my favourite films, amongst the hundreds of films that I have seen since the 1940’s decade. As such I love seeing genuine comedy films. Every Hindi film has atleast one or two comedy scenes. In earlier films, there used to be a specialist actor – the Comedian. Nowadays, especially from the Amitabh times, the film’s Hero does the comedy scenes, stunt scenes and emotional scenes himself, thus eliminating the comedy specialists totally. After Asrani, Paintal and others of their ilk, I don’t think any major comedy specialist rose in Hindi films.

So far, I have been presenting qawwaalis from the decade of seventies on the blog. For a change today, I am presenting this one from the decade of sixties. In fact, today’s song was lying with me since long and Initially I sent only the audio of this song (the only vailable version at that time). But now the movie as well as the video of this songs has become available online.

Today’s song is from a forgotten movie of the late 1970s “Bagula Bhagat” (1979). It was directed by Harmesh Malhotra and produced by Gullu Sippy. It had a cast of Ashok Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Shabana Azmi, Kamini Kaushal, Padma Khanna, Mehmood Jr. etc. I think I saw a short video of the movie online somewhere and think I spied Anwar Hussain and Goga Kapoor as his henchman. It had music by Kalyanji Anandji and songs written by Anjaan. Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle as playback singers. The movie was written by Subhash Ghai and Bhalla.

Top three actors of the golden era of Hindi cinema (from mid 1940s to late 1960s) were Dilip-Dev-Raj. They were nearly of the same age though their debut years were “Jwar Bhata” (Dilip Kumar) in 1944, “Hum Ek Hain” which came in 1946 (Dev Anand) and “Valmiki” also in 1946 which had Raj Kapoor in his first adult role but it was a tiny role. The three of them carved their own path and were the dominant stars of the Golden Era. Raj Kapoor went on to become a much-acclaimed actor-director earning him the title of ‘The greatest Showman’, Dev Anand also became an actor-director and was usually associated with slick and stylish city-based films and became popular for his trendy fashion sense as well, and Dilip Kumar came to be hailed as the greatest actor and set a high bar for future generations to emulate.

A special birthday. A landmark birthday. Don’t know what it is called in other parts of the country or world; but I know it as ‘Saptadi‘ meaning 70th birthday. And this post is to wish the concerned celebrity-entertainer who is an all rounder as far as emoting is concerned. He can be a repentant son (as in ‘Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni’ (1989)), cute and lovable father (as in ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai’ (2000)), mean police officer (remember Inspector Laxman Bhide of ‘Insaaf’ (1987)) and the most lovable characters of Nandu to Raja Babu & Crime-Master Go-Go. These are just a few of the varied roles he has enacted in his 47 years in the film industry. I am sure the readers would have guessed that today is the 70th birth date of Shakti Kapoor.
