Mukesh and his Composers – 49
We come back to that fateful day of August 27th, on which in 1976, in far off Detroit city, Mukesh left for his heavenly abode.
As such, this is a special post featuring Mukesh’s songs for an important composer duo for whom he sang the maximum number of songs. Also, I have arrived at S.No. 49 in this series featuring Mukesh and his Composers.
But before we discuss their songs, let’s pause for a moment and try to answer a question – who really made Mukesh, Mukesh?
On one hand, we have Anil Biswas, who with his one song in ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) (“Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De“) propelled Mukesh onto the center stage along with other contemporary stalwarts. Thereafter, there was no looking back for Mukesh.
On the other, we have Naushad claiming his share of the credit in making Mukesh come out of his Saigal-style of singing and have his own identity.
Whereas Anil Biswas continued training Mukesh and used his voice for a few more films, Naushad literally stopped for almost two decades after ‘Mela’ (1948), ‘Anokhi Ada’ (1948) and ‘Andaz’ (1949) in which there were as many as 16 songs in just 3 films (including the unreleased ones), before once again reaching out to Mukesh in ‘Saathi’ (1968).
But the fact of the matter is before these two great composers, Mukesh had already begun his career singing for Ashok Ghosh in 1941 with ‘Nirdosh’, Khemchand Prakash in ‘Dukh Sukh’ (1942), Bulo C Rani in ‘Moorti’ (1945) etc. The triad in Moorti’ with Khursheed and Hameeda Bano was a rage all over the country.
After ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) and before ‘Mela’ (1948), Mukesh had sung for a host of composers such as Hansraj Behl, Pt. Govidram, Ghulam Haider, Snehal Bhatkar, MA Rauf, Ram Ganguly etc. And as I have highlighted in my past few NFS posts, Mukesh had already recorded six private songs in Delhi before he even set his foot in Bombay.
So, I believe Mukesh was self-made and sent by the Gods to enthrall us mortals on earth.
I am not for a moment saying that Anil Biswas and Naushad had no role to play in shaping Mukesh’s career but only stressing that he had enough capabilities of his own to be a great singer, which he eventually became, and stays put to this day and after.
Having said all the above, it is also true that the credit for much of his fame and popularity in the subcontinent and beyond also goes to a composer duo who swore by his voice especially for the legendary Raj Kapoor.
Well, the names of Raj Kapoor and Mukesh are enough to put together a few more names i.e. lyricists Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, singer Lata Mangeshkar and we inevitably end up discussing the evergreen songs of composer duo of Shanker and Jaikishan.
In this special post, I have enlisted all the songs of Mukesh for SJ that are known in the public domain. It includes a couple of songs that are known to have been recorded but remain untraceable as on date.
Mukesh started his journey with SJ in their debut film ‘Barsaat’ (1949). This film had two duets with Lata Mangeshkar (one lip-synced by RK and the other by Prem Nath) but had no solos. Even then his perfect emphatic voice to match the screen presence and feelings of Raj Kapoor was evident. Also, a year earlier, SJ had assisted composer Ram Ganguly for ‘Aag’ (1948) which was the first film directed and produced by Raj Kapoor. Mukesh’s voice for Raj Kapoor in this film had created a forever belief that they were made for each other.
And, indeed, they were.
The very next film ‘Awara’ (1951) created history of sorts. The title song crossed borders and became quite popular in more than a dozen countries and especially the eastern bloc including the Soviet Union. The phenomenon amplified with another great song of Mukesh in RK film’s later venture ‘Shree 420’ (1955) (after ‘Aah’ and ‘Boot Polish’ in 1953). These two solos made Mukesh the first transborder cultural iconic voice of India. The two songs had put our country on the musical cultural map of the modern world. The credit did go the composers and lyricists (Shailendra did write both the said songs) but Mukesh and RK benefited the most.
The craze of these two songs continues to this day in many countries with modern-day reels and video snippets appearing regularly. TV in those days was called the idiot box. I don’t know what our smartphones are called. They are a thousand times more idiotic. 🙂
Mukesh was the first male playback singer to win the coveted Filmfare award for his solo in the film ‘Anadi’ (1959), music of which was again scored by SJ. In fact, out of the 4 Filmfare awards that Mukesh won, 3 have music provided by SJ. So, there is little doubt that he owed much of his success and fame for his association with the RK camp. Insofar as SJ duo is concerned, I have already written on them in my post for the song “Tik-Tik-Tik-Tik Chalti Jaaye Ghadi” from film ‘Kal, Aaj Aur Kal’ (1971).
Coming to the table itself, it’s a long one with 132 songs on board. Again, it will be a herculean task for me to write about every song in the list though it will be worth the effort as most songs carry their own legacy.

Almost all the songs are extremely popular and well known to music lovers and so I take the liberty of avoiding writing on each song. Multiple permutations and combinations of lyricists, actors, year wise compilations etc. can also be made for a detailed study, but for paucity of time, I shall desist from venturing into the same also.
49 and 71 are NFS which have been already covered on the blog. 131 and 132 are also two NFS yet to be represented.
78 from ‘Sangam’ (1964) is rather a curious song whose existence is not known properly. There are fans who say that it was very much part of the premiere but was later dropped from the film release. The song is included in MGK-II and there are also other print proofs that the song was in fact made. The audio continues to elude.
MGK-II also reminds me of late Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji who incidentally passed away on the same date of 27 August. I once again offer my humble tributes to him.
Recently, I learnt that “Kabhi Hum Mein Tum Mein Qaraar Tha” from ‘Ganga Aur Geeta’ (1979) and written by Qamar Jalalbabdi is also not available. Multiple queries have been sent to experts, record collectors etc. but there has been no response yet.
I find it strange to conclude such an important collaboration sans detailed description of the songs. But as I said earlier, the list is too long, and the songs are well known.
So, we move on to today’s post wherein I have two choices. 131 and 132. We recently celebrated 80th Independence Day and I take this opportunity of posting yet another patriotic song by Mukesh.

Thanks for the post . I liked the post and find it well capsuled the works of Mukesh-SJ -HS, combo ( all my favourites)
One observation . More than being a patriotic song, it appears to me a publicity for Congress during some election. Note ‘Pyar ka chunav hai…:

The word THANKS will not be sufficient for such a wonderful and articulate post with detailed information on MUKESH and SJ combination.Mukesh voice seems to be simple in comparison to other singers of the period but it seemed to be coming straight out of heart and that makes the difference.
