Clad in starched white kurta and pyjama with an unshaven face, his appearance gives an impression of a Bengali intellectual. His early association with Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Hemant Kumar and Salil Chowdhary supported that impression of mine until one day I came to know that he was born in a Sikh family in pre-partition Punjab.
Yes, he is Sampooran Singh Kalra, better known by his pen name, Gulzar (born on 18/08/1934) who turns 85 today and is still active in pursuit of his first love – writing poems and short stories. He continues to be associated with Hindi films with occasional indulgence as a lyricist. His association with Hindi films started, first as a lyricist followed by screen-play/dialogue writer and finally as a producer/director. He has already spent nearly 6 decades in Hindi film industry and this association is continuing.

“Ummeed” (1971) was a movie that was started in early 1960s but it could be released only in 1971. By that time the actors figuring in the move had ended up being actors of yesteryears. A few of them had even passed away.
“Ummeed” (1971) was directed by Nitin Bose for Raja Films Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Nanda, Joy Mukherji, Leela Naidu, Tarun Bose, Leela Mishra, Chandrima Bhaduri, Hazara Singh, Parasram, Hussain, Ravikant, Nazeer Kashmiri, Ramesh, Laxmichhaaya, Jeewankala, Madhumati, Jankidas, Sabita Chatterji, Tuntun, Agha etc in it.

Am writing this post with a heavy heart.
I never expected that I’d be writing a post on this occasion so soon.
But if we’ve learnt anything about life in all our lives, it is that life is unpredictable.
For all the wonderful advancements that science has made, we still don’t know who will live how long. All we know is that everyone has to go some day.
As it turned out, Independence Day 2019 was the day that Vidya Sinha, well-known heroine of (mainly) the 1970s, had to leave us and go.

Today (15 august 2019) is not only the independence day, it also happens to be the festival of Rakhi.
I have managed to post one independence day song on this occasion. Now it is time I cover a Rakhi festival song as well, before the day wears off.

Today (15 august 2019) is the 73rd independence day of India. It is already evening and no post has appeared in the blog so far. But I will try and post topical songs today like we have always done in the blog on the past such occasions.

hullo to all of Atuldom
Yesterday (13 august 2019) was the birth anniversary of our dear Sridevi, hailed as the first female superstar of Bollywood. I was not liking it that we had let it go without a post. Then last thing before I switched off for the day, I saw a song on some satellite channel and had my ‘eureka’ moment. I found a song from the later period of Sridevi’s career when she had started experimenting with the characters she played.

Today’s song is from film Shakuntala-43. This was the first film of V.Shantaram, under his own new banner- Rajkamal Kala mandir. The song is sung by film’s Heroine, Jayashree, on whom it was filmed also. The song was written by Ratan Piya ( I like this musical name, really !) and the music was by Vasant Desai.
The film was directed by Shantaram and the Cinematographer was his own brother V. Awadhoot. The cast of the film Shakuntala-43 was, Jayashree, Chandramohan, nana Palshikar, Nimbalkar, Zohra, Shantarin, Ameena, Vilas, Ratan piya etc etc.

hullo to all in Atuldom
We have all heard “Gore gore, o baanke chhore, kabhi meri gali aaya karo, gori gori, o banke chhori, chaahe roz bulaaya karo”. Now that song from “Samadhi” was filmed on two actresses one of whom –Kuldeep Kaur- was dressed in male attire. That was in 1950. There have been numerous occasions where a lady does a stage song dressed as a man or vice versa. In such cases the man dressed as a lady sings in a female voice –as Amir Khan had done in a song in the 90s. And Kishore Kumar before him in “Dilli Ka Thug” (but that was a genre in itself) But always as a rule we seem to have females who are dressed as males sing in female voice as was the case in the song from “Naya Daur” “Reshmi salwar kurta jaali ka roop saha nahin jaaye nakhrewaali ka”; or the one from “Kismet” “Kajra Mohabbatwala akhiyon mein aisa dala”. We have had one instance (if my knowledge is right) where the male is dressed in both genders and sings in the voice of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. I am talking of a Mehmood song (in league with the Kishore Kumar song in terms of artist’s caliber. ??). But today I discovered a song which has the actress dressed as both male and female singing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. Now this is a first encounter for me. I had seen this song ages ago, that is before my association with ASAD; which means that those days I used to listen and enjoy the songs without bothering about who sang who wrote or whose music! Etc. So, here is my heartfelt thank you to ASAD for making me aware of the songs I listen to ??

I had not heard of a film named ‘Chatran’ (1988) until recently. The title of the film was unusual. I was wondering as to why the film in which Gulzar and R D Burman were associated, has remained obscure. After a search on the Google, I got the answer.
