And thus he sang in 1949, with no conception that his voice and words are going to resonate around the globe into the 21st century or the next millennia. If he had known how famous and well known one day he was destined to be, I wonder how much more conscious and eager to reach the heights a performer of his class would have been. Or if he could have excelled himself in what way. As it is, he was in a class of his own. The thing about this whole saga called Mohammed Rafi ‘s songs, is that there is/was simply no competition.

Here is that day again.

Yes, it is the 31st of July (2018) today – which for HFM lovers, wherever they are in the world, signifies just one thing.

The death anniversary of Mohammad Rafi – respectfully referred to as Rafisaab, by one and all.

I am sure there will be events around the country to solemnly mark the occasion. Why just in the country, probably even across the world, considering how distributed India’s diaspora around the world is.

Millions of people will be remembering today as Rafisaab’s Remembrance Day – a term we also often use on this blog.

The poem, kaarwaan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe and the poet Neeraj are inseparable. The poem was later adapted as a song in the film ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’ (1965). But if I mention a verse from a ghazal, ‘kaarwaan guzra kiya raahguzar dekha kiya’ with more or less similar import, most of the readers of the Blog (barring those who have interest in the Urdu poetry) may not be aware as to who wrote this ghazal. The poet of this ghazal was Faani Badayuni. This name may not ring bell but the name will surely bring into the minds of most of us, another poet-lyricist from Badayun, Shakeel Badayuni.

From the title of the film, it looks like a Historical film. However, genuine Historical films are rare in our country. Historical titles are used to actually showcase a Love story. It is generally a song, dance, love, sacrifice film, culminating into a Tragic or a happy ending. Films which are true to its historical content have hardly been made here. Of course, we can not blame the producers or the film makers. They make what sells !

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 17
———————————————————————

Some achievements boggle your mind. A few years ago it was 10k song and now its 10 years of this blog. Maybe I should say it bloggles my mind! Terrible puns aside, I apologize for this delayed write up. Some incidents over the last weekend, caused me to tragically lose my phone, and after a remote data erase, miraculously find it again. It felt like a Hindi film honestly, one I would have titled ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ if there hadn’t already been one by that name.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Kul kalank-45.

If one critically looks at the artistes’ mix in Hindi films from Talkie era beginning upto 1947, one would find that, if not a majority, a sizable number was of Muslim community. The 15 % section of Indian population was prominently present in the film world. Actors, actresses, directors, singers, Lyricists and Music directors… you name a department and they were there. In a way this community enriched the film and music by bringing Ghazals, Thumris etc into the Music and dance items like Mujra and qawalis became famous and popular part of the Hindi films.

Mukesh and his Composers – 15
—————————————–
Remembering Mukesh on his birthday (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976)

Mukesh singing for Bappi Lahari is bound to raise eyebrows for the simple reason that the two artists worked in two different periods of time.
However, when Bappida started his hindi music journey in the beginning of the 70s, Mukesh was still giving playback. His first score for hindi movies was for the film Nanha Shikari (1973) and incidentally his first composition featured Mukesh. This was a pleasant surprise for me, when I was going through some articles on Bappida. For his fans here is his official website.
