Hullo to all of Atuldom

Today, 29th September happens to be the 84th birth anniversary of Mehmood Ali commonly known as Mehmood. In a career spanning four decades he acted in around 300 films. I am not sure how many songs in these 300 films where picturised on him and how many Mehmood songs our blog has! We don’t have a separate category of songs on Mehmood, like we have for Johnny Walker. The songs of these two actors were always very special. But I am sure there will be enough songs to take us through a life time if we stick to posting one song on his birth anniversary and one on the anniversary of his passing away. Of course there is nobody to stop us from breaking this rule and sneaking in a few extras, right?
[Editor Note: Request is noted for a category of Mehmood songs. 🙂 ]

Wow and wow, what a song. Same story, same pattern – production house is obscure, film is obscure, actors not so well accepted as grade A material, music director not so well recognized as top of the line. And that is where we find some the most titillating gems of music. Under different circumstances, this song could have been top of charts. E.g. if this song was performed on screen by, say, Shammi Kapoor, well then it would have been treated as a hit, and would have found its place in the listings of timeless classics of Rafi Sb’s fun songs.

Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 12

‘Sajni’, a 1956 black and white social film was produced under the banner of Golden Pictures, Bombay by Isabel Cliford and PR Patkar. The film was directed by Vasant Rao Painter. The music, the main highlight off the film, was by the great Sudhir Phadke (popularly known as “Babuji’) with the assistance of Shri Jog.

September 28th is the date which the connoisseurs of Hindi film music would definitely remember for being the birthday of Lata Mangeshkar, one of the greatest singers born in the 20th century. We are fortunate that she is in the midst of us hale and hearty and continues to sing songs for Hindi films. As per http://www.myswar.com, the last song she recorded was ‘jeena kya hai jaana maine’ for the film ‘Dunno Y2 Life Is A Moment’ (2015). With a singing carrier of over 7 decades with a vast treasure of her songs as well as numerous articles and books on her life, Lata Mangeshkar does not need introduction. In fact, her introduction in a nutshell is ‘meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai’ (My voice is the identity).

Hullo to all in atuldom

Its been a while since I wrote a post for the blog. No that is not so. I have made notes in my mind by the dozen in the last couple of months and typed out two of them sent it across to the Head of the Posting Department of our blog. Unfortunately they didn’t get posted as the Head of the department was awaiting a special post by his trusted Lieutenant for what is now being termed as “artificial” milestones (as Atulji likes to call them) but a special is a special and other things can wait for them is my opinion. I hope I can hear or rather see nods in agreement of my point of view.

There are two beautiful songs rendered by G M Durrani in ‘Nayi Kahaani’ (1943). Fortunately, video clips of both the songs are available. In the first of the two songs, neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare kitne meethhe kitne pyaare a boy suddenly gets up from the group of musicians and start singing sargam in a ‘rapid fire’ mode and then sits down for the song to continue. He sings sargam in his own voice. Again, in hamen kya ab khizaan jaaye na jaaye , the boy gets up during the musical interlude of the song and starts conducting the orchestra. These are the ‘scene stealer’ situations in the songs which, I am sure, must have remained in the minds of the audience when they came out of the theatre after watching the film. The boy was actor-singer Balakram.

This article is the 12400th song post in the blog.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 35

There is an interesting aside related to this iconic song from the 1970 film ‘Yaadgaar’. This song was originally written as a romantic song with the lines

रात अकेली साये दो
हुस्न भी हो और इश्क़ भी हो
तो फिर उसके बाद

It was selected by Manoj Kumar for his seminal classic ‘Upkar’. Eventually, this song somehow could not be fitted into the storyline. The song remained in suspended state, till Manoj Kumar revived it three years later, got it modified into a song of social messaging, and included it in his film ‘Yaadgaar’. After spending two and a half decades practically in the wilderness in the industry, here came the first major super hit for the song writer. This surely must be a record of some sorts.

The Voice of Mukesh #71
– – – – – – – – – – – – –

This voice has such an alluring appeal. No matter what the song may be, Mukesh ji’s voice has the quality to enliven the song with the depth of his soulful emotion. The words come alive with his rendition. Listen to any of his songs, whether they have been popularized on account of association with successful films and actors, or they belong to obscure, unheard and unsuccessful films. His songs from many such films have remained obscure and unheard. For songs of Mukesh, the unexplored era is primarily in the 1970s.  There still are many songs sung by him, that have to find their place on this blog. Many of them are unfamiliar and obscure, and some are familiar but unheard for long.

Today, while we add one more movie of ‘1951’ on the blog, we also add one more movie under the category of ‘movies having same title’.
