How do I decide upon the songs to be discussed on a particular day ? It depends on several factors. On special days, I may decide to discuss special songs. Those special days are festivals, birth/death anniversaries etc. On those days, I discuss songs on a particular theme, or songs on a particular artist.

When India won the world cup on 2nd april 2011, it was a great feeling for millions of Indian cricket fans and they celebrated late into the nights and well into the next day and the next. The fact that the final was played on saturday and there were two days of holidays on the following days (Sunday being the normal holiday and monday being Indian calender’s new year day), people had enough time to celebrate and get over the hangover.

“Kaala Sonaa” (1975) to my mind is inspired from “Westerns”. In this movie, Feroz Khan plays Clint Eastwood. Unlike Clint Eastwood, who would barely speak, our desi tough guy would not be averse to multi task. He would find time to romance, sing and dance, in addition to performing his day job of seeking revenge for the murder of his father.

Seeing that India has won the cricket world cup 2011, I, like millions of my countryman, am walking on cloud nine at the moment. The hangover will take a while to go away. Mela (1971) is a movie I remember from my early days. I believe that , inspite of the Rajesh Khanna wave threatening to drown every non-Rajesh movie in those days, this movie did manage to do well at the box-office. Its songs also became pretty popular too, especially the Rafi-Lata duet, “Rut hai milan ki”.

Loris, or lullabies, have always had a special place in Indian life, and many of these are sung by mothers and grandmothers as they rock the baby to sleep in the old fashioned cradle formed by hanging a long piece of cloth from a hook in the ceiling or in a regular cradle. Some loris have also been sung by men, generally widowers, and these tend to be melancholy ones, but there are some exceptions. In Carnatic music, the raga Neelambari is the one used to induce sleep and most lullabies in the South are sung in this raga.

“Hanste Zakhm” (1973) was, not surprisingly (in hindsight) , a commercial disaster. Chetan Anand, the maker of this movie, was so enamoured of Priya Rajwansh that she was the heroine of all his movies, despite her wooden face. No doubt she tried hard, as did others, to perform to the best of their abilities, but this movie had other weak points viz confused storyline, etc.
