Today (4 August 2020) is the 91st birth anniversary of Kishore Kumar (4 August 1929- 13 october 1987). And incidentally, today is the 4400th day for the blog !

Three articles from three regulars discussing Kishore Kumar have already appeared on the blog today. It is interesting to note that all the three regulars decided to discuss three songs from the decade of 1980s.

The golden era of HFM, which began in 1949, ended in 1980. People who lived through the golden era can notice a palpable lack of overall quality in HFM after 1980. There were quite a few reasons for that. I have given this matter some thought and I have come up with some interesting observations. I will use those observations some other time in some other article. Here I will mention it in brief that the golden era of HFM began when Indian classical base (melody based) was wedded with western classical base (symphony based). This marriage, which gave us the best of both the worlds, got dissolved in 1980. Western symphony was replaced by western cacophony while lyrics of the songs were dispensed with.

There are Hindi films in which almost all the songs have become popular. But those films are often identified with a single song in the sense that the name of the film brings back the memory of the most popular song of that film which has been stuck in the minds of the listeners for long. I give below a sample list of five films which are often identified with one of its popular songs:

Aaraam (1951): ae jaan-e-jigar dil mein samaane aajaa
Yahudi (1958): ye mera deewaanapan hai
Bambai Ka Babu (1960): chal ri sajni ab kya soche
Soorat Aur Seerat (1962): bahut diya dene waale ne tuhjko
Bandini (1963): o jaane waale ho sake to laut ke aana

The significance of these five films with songs mentioned thereagainst is that all these five songs have been sung by Mukesh and that too the only song he has rendered in these films. That is the power of Mukesh’s melonchalic voice laced with sadness. Mukesh had said in one of his interviews that if he has a choice of 10 songs to sing, out of which one is a sad song, he would reject remaining nine songs.

Today, the 18th of July, is the death anniversary of one of the Hindi film industry’s biggest superstars. Probably one of its most controversial too. And certainly one of its most polarizing.

No prizes for guessing who I’m talking about. Of course, I’m talking about the one-time heartthrob of millions of women, Rajesh Khanna.

It’s been 8 years now since that day in 2012. I still remember the morning I got to hear the news – I was stunned. I knew he was ailing, but even so I never expected it would be so soon.

Today (14 July 2020) is the 101st birth anniversary of Sagat Singh (14 july 1919- 26 September 2001). He had nothing to do with HFM, but I am discussing him today. why ? Because I think that he deserves to be known to all of us. His name should occupy a pride of place among the great sons of India.

Today’s song is from film Masoom-41, the first among the three same title films made later in 1960 and 1996. I was tempted but I am not counting the funny title ” Masoom Chudail” made in 2000 !

Today’s song is from film Aagey Kadam-43. This is an obscure movie, in the sense that no information about its story etc is available anywhere on the Net or Film India magazine issues. However, from the lyrics of its various songs, one can say that the film is about a love story set amidst Patriotic atmosphere. Of course, being British times, such films had to be careful, lest their raw material quota of Raw Film would get into problem, during the wartime controls. Further the tablet of patriotism has to be sugar coated, so as not to get into legal tangle like perhaps “Kismet” of Bombay Talkies !

Hullo Atuldom

Ideally this post should have come last year, when this veteran of about a few hundred movies, turned 80. But then that has not happened.

I have decided that we shall not let the occasion go unnoticed. And in south India, the celebration for a person turning 80 is normally on completing 81, as the system of calculating the auspicious date to celebrate says that the person should have witnessed a 1000 full moons in his life, with the life being said to have started after the 1st birthday. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Back here on the blog after a fairly long break.
I daresay it would’ve been even longer if it were not a very special occasion today.

From today, we start the centenary celebrations of Sahir Ludhianvi’s birth.
Since he was born on 8th March 1921, today happens to be his 99th birth anniversary.

So yes, it is a very special occasion for Urdu poetry and classic HFM lovers. As a massive Sahir fan, I thought I owed it to him to write a post for the occasion. I’ve written so often about him here, on practically every birth and death anniversary, and have nothing new to say anymore – and yet it feels like a betrayal of sorts to let this day go by, without paying tribute to him.
