As per Hindu mythology, the Sun god is travelling in the sky on a chariot pulled by seven horses. After pulling the chariot for a long time, the six horses are tired. It is the seventh horse who remains and continues to pull the chariot signifying it to be the horse of dreams and aspirations for the future. In 1952, Dr Dharamvir Bharati published his novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’. I read the novella in full which is available online. The novella is written in narration style in which the protagonist, Manik Mulla narrates to his three friends, three separate romance stories relating to three girls. What is of interest is that Manik Mulla is not only the narrator of the stories, but he is also the characters in all the three stories who loves these three girls at different points of time in his life. As Agyeya said in his foreword to the novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’ is not the one story comprising three stories, but three stories constituting one story. The author, in his introduction, has revealed that during his early period of writing, he was influenced by Marxist objectives rather than hardcore Marxism. Today’s song is from the movie ‘Nargis-1993’. This movie seems to be an obscure or un-released movie of its time. I was not aware of this movie or its songs. But I got to listen to today’s song on ‘Vividh Bharati’ around two years back and since then I was longing to share it on the blog. When I listened to this song first I was not aware of the name of the movie it was from. It was only later when I looked for the details of its movie and other songs that I became aware of the name of the movie.

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born on 1st July 1938 to a father who wanted the son to be a wrestler. The obedient son did go to the Akhada and trained with his father along with learning music and practising at a friend’s home.
Pt. Hariji has said once, and I quote, “he was not very good at wrestling but the training had helped him build up strength and stamina which has helped him play the bansuri (flute) to this day.”

March 7th sees Anupam Kher, the versatile actor, turn a year older. He has played characters beyond his calendar age in numerous films. He has played the archetypal villain with as much finesse as serious supporting roles. He has also tried playing characters which are comic but of course some of these have been over-the-top and mostly making faces, using odd hair-get-ups etc. would be used to create comic effect. But I think we can excuse this fine actor of these excesses as he used to balance them by doing roles as in “Daddy” (1989), Utsav (1984), Karma (1986), Rao Saheb (1985), Kaash (1987), Zevar etc.

His was the character needed to bring out the hero in Raj-Dilip-Dev, Dharam-Rajendra-Sunil. Shammi Kapoor fooled him in “Kashmir Ki Kali”, “Bluffmaster” etc’ Kishore Kumar made him run after him in “Half Ticket”. He was unhappily-married to the girl Manoj Kumar loved in “Do Badan”.
