#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
After ‘Silsilaa – 1981’ Yash Chopra had taken a short-break from Direction and his next directorial venture was ‘Mashaal – 1984’. In between there were two films under Yash Raj Films banner ‘Naakhuda’ in 1981 and ‘Sawaal’ in 1982. He produced ‘Sawaal’ in ‘1982’ under his own banner ‘Yash Raj films’, but he didn’t do the direction for this movie. It was directed by Ramesh Talwar.
This movie had an impressive star cast including Waheeda Rehman, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Poonam Dhillon, Prem Chopra, Helen, Padma Khanna , Kalpana Iyer, Jagdish Raj, Yunus Parvez, Mac Mohan, Gautam Sarin, Vikas Anand, Harjeet, Ranveer Raj, Avtar Gill, Anjan Shrivastava and others. Manmohan Krishan and Madan Puri had a guest appearance in this movie whereas Randhir Kapoor & Swaroop Sampat had a special appearance in this movie. Music of this film was by Khayyam Saab and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Saab. In fact, music for both the movies for ‘Yash Raj Films’, coming after ‘Silsilaa-1982’ was composed by Khayyam Saab i.e. the movies ‘Naakhudaa-1981’ and ‘Sawaal-1982’.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-15
This post of mine sent in the end of october is coming after a long gap. If it gets published in Novemeber’2026 then my score for the last three months viz Aug’26, Sep’26 and Oct’26 will be ‘one post a month’. In my journey with this blog I never imagined coming across a situation like this. But then sometimes things are beyond our control. When I sat down to complete this half-done write-up many things were going through my mind. There are many half-done write-ups waiting to be cfinished for final presentation. ‘Baazigar’ (1993) was a blockbuster film which I missed to watch in the theatre after its release. Even later, I had no occasion to watch the film on TV and Video sharing/OTT platforms. But I was aware of the films hit songs mainly because they used to regularly appear on TV channels (probably on MTV/Channel V) after the release of the film. The occasion to watch the film has come now because I have selected one of the songs from the film picturised on Shilpa Shetty who made her debut with this film. I found the film interesting even after three decades mainly for one reason – its slick editing. The film never deviates from the main plot even during the comedy sub-plots.

‘Sanam Harjaai’ (1995) was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar who also wrote the story. The cast included Himanshu (debut), Saadhika (debut), Simran (debut), Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Reema Lagoo, Shiva, Pinky, Suhas Joshi, Yunus Pervez, Anil Nagrath, etc. The film was majorly shot in New Zealand.

‘Zulmi’ (1999) was produced by Satyendra Pal Chaudhry and directed by Kuku Kohli. The cast included Akshya Kumar, Twinkle Khanna, Aruna Irani, Dara Singh, Milind Gunaji, Deep Dillon, Rakhee Malhotra, Amrish Puri, Gulshan Bawra, Preeti Joshi, Arun Bakshi etc. In this film, Milind Gunaji turns villain to his own guardian at the instigation of the main antagonist, Dilip Tahil.

‘Gunaahgaar’ (1980) was produced and directed by Rahul Rawail under his banner, Rahul Theatres International. The cast included Rajendra Kumar, Asha Parekh, Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Ranjeet, Asrani, Rita Bhaduri, Pinchoo Kapoor, Kamal Kapoor, Sundar, Gufi Paintal etc. Raza Murad and Paintal made their special appearances in the film. It was a rare occasion that Ranjeet played a positive role, a friend of Rishi Kapoor though he had a shades of villain for those harming his friend.
