Hullo to all in Atuldom
So today (30 june 2016) is the last day of June. On reviewing the page of Anniversaries on our blog I find that we have a few music directors whose birthdays were in this month. We had Sajjad Hussain, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan & RD Burman. And today 30th June is the birth anniversary of Kalyanji Veerji Shah. I mean Kalyanji of the Kalyanji – Anandji Duo. He would have turned 88 today.

The blog has seen two dry days in a row when no new posts were made. It is something unusual for the blog but it cannot be avoided. As it is, I was travelling all these days. The duet selection for 1973 is composed by an old time stalwart – OP Nayyar. The music from the film ‘Taxi Driver’ made quite a splash on the radio waves, when it was released, especially the Krishan Kalle number “Pyaar Karte Ho Yaar, Karke Darte Ho Yaar” and the peppy Asha Bhosle number “Baalam Harjaai, Jaa Main To Aankh Milaa Pachhtaai”. This duet was also famously heard on the radio frequently.

Introducing Shekhar Gupta – one of the quieter albeit active voices on the blog. Over the past two years, I have been in email communication with him, on various topics related to film music and the blog. He comes across as an unpretentious and humble personality, that belies his stature and accomplishments. In recent weeks, when I sent him an email request to get some personal information from him, his response started with such statements of humbleness and gratefulness, in a very friendly tone.

‘Inkaar’ from 1977 is one of my more favorite cops-and-robbers films. Almost the entire picture is a study in understatement. A film that flows pretty close to the levels of realism, and all the characters seem very natural and very normal in the surroundings they are placed in. Most of the action and most of the histrionics is played very normally. There is not much in the film that can be singled out as something overplayed. A difficult feat to pull off, given that it is a crime and detection story.

Normally it is believed that O P Nayyar composed music for only two Shammi Kapoor movies, viz. “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) and “Kashmir Ki Kali”(1964). But that is not correct. O P Nayyar also composed the music of “Mujrim” (1958). This was an Eagle Films Production. It was produced by F C Mehra and directed by O P Ralhan. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Ragini, Shubha Khote, Kamal Kapoor, S. N. Banerjee, Tun Tun, Mumtaz Begum, Amrit Rana, Abdul, Agha Miraz, Ratan Gaurang, Sood, Johnny Walker, Geeta Bali, Murad, Ramesh Thakur, Padmini etc in it.
