Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 35

‘श’
“शम्मा बुझने को चली”
Of the many colors of Rafi Sb’s voice, probably the most touching, and the most impressive is his interpretation of the emotions of sadness. Maybe, it be so that the “. . . sweetest songs are the ones that tell of the saddest thoughts” (from the poetry of Percy Shelley, that inspired the iconic song of ‘Patita’ (1953) – “Hain Sab Se Madhur Wo Geet Jinhen Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hain”). And maybe, that the genuineness and honesty of expressions that go together with the unfeigned and substantive voice of Rafi Sb, it simply makes us feel the true depth of this ‘sweetness’ – a sweetness that touches a very familiar, a very dear chord within.

Another request from Arvinder ji. And another delightful song that I must thank him for introducing to me. I heard this song for the first time after Arvinder ji’s persistent requests finally made me pull this song out and listen to it. It was love at first hear 😉 (ah, the phrase being used again today). And yes, another theme being used again today is the ‘keep your hearts safe’ message. In an earlier post today, Atul ji has uploaded the Shamshad Begum song – “Meri Nazren Pockekmaar Sambhaalo Dil Ke Pocket Ko”. And in this song, the lady is announcing that
आई हूँ रंग ले के मैं बहार के
रखना काबू
दिल रखना काबू
The film is ‘Naag Padmini’ from 1957. This is a historical film, produced by Mulkhraj Bhakri under the banner of Golden Movies, Bombay and is directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. The cast of actors includes Mahipal, Shakeela, Hiralal, Maruti, Tiwari, Niranjan Sharma, Kammo, Krishna Kumari, Kanchanmala, Tun Tun, Daljeet, Sadiq, amongst others. There are 8 songs in this film, all coming from the pen of Prem Dhawan. Music is by Sanmukh Babu.

Today (14 april 2017) as I write this post, I cannot help but remember Legendary Singer Shamshad Begum. It is after all her Birthday. It has been nearly four years since She left for her heavenly abode. Like two of my favourites S D Burman and C Ramchandra, She was born in and passed away in the same month. In her case it was the month of April. She was born on 14th April 1919 at Lahore (as She told me when I interviewed her) and passed away on 23rd April 2013. Today (14 april 2017) would have been her 98th Birthday.

Today, April 12th 2017 is the 107th birth anniversary of one of the earliest multi-talented film personalities who, despite being a post-graduate in English literature, started his filmy career as a painter and a still photographer in New Theatres, Calcutta in 1933. With sheer hard work and talent, he rose to become the screenplay and dialogue writer and lyricist within a year. In about 5 years from joining the film industry, he became a director. He was Kedar Nath Sharma, better known as Kidar Sharma (12/04/1910 – 29/04/1999).

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
When the previous instalment in this series was posted, I had started it with the word ‘Goodness’. It was because that post came in after a gap of 5 months from the one previous to it. Now I am thinking what word to use – this instalment is now coming in almost 17 (seventeen) months from the previous post. Maybe you would say, the less said the better. 😉

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 34
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
‘व’
“वो चाँद सा चेहरा लिए, छत पर तेरा आना”
tu raat khadi thi chhat pe
nee main samjha ke chaand nikla
There is something so uniquely desi about this romantic element – ‘chhat pe’ – ‘on the rooftop’ scenario. If it were the western milieu, the thought would be to go as far as the balcony; the scenario being Juliet present at the balcony and Romeo serenading her from the garden below. No where the western writer has thought of ascending to the terrace, bring in the soubriquet of the moon, and then let the verse take over from there. On the subcontinent, so much romance seems to have happened on the terrace, in the pages of prose and in the lines of verse.

As soon as he discovers that I have uploaded a new post, Arvinder ji (I should say, Dear Arvinder ji) is immediately on my case – “where are the songs that I have requested”. And so it transpires this time also. As soon as he became aware of my previous post (of Tuesday early morning), I have been getting calls and messages of all types reminding me of his list of requests for songs that are very dear, but are not easily available at this time. We had a small get together of our group yesterday afternoon. Arvinder ji was also present. And I don’t need to add much more to say how he urged me to post the songs he has requested.
