Today, December 13th 2020 is the 34th Remembrance Day of Smita Patil who today would have been 65 years of age, perhaps donning the hat of a director.

What an incredible filmy journey Smita Patil had in a short span of about 12 years! She acted in 70 Hindi films of which 18 films were new wave films. In addition, she acted in about a dozen non-Hindi new wave films. At the age of 23, she got her first National Award for the Best Actress for her role in ‘Bhumika’ (1977). After 3 years, she was bestowed with another National Award for the Best Actress in ‘Chakra’ (1980). At the age of 29, she was one of the juries in the Montreal International Film Festival (1984). At the age of 30, She got Padma Shri Award.

We have discussed ‘rail’ songs in our blog from time to time. Train and/or railways have always been my favorite subject and I always love to travel in trains whenever possible. I have many fond memories associated with my various journeys in narrow gauge, meter gauge and broad-gauge trains.

I am not well-informed about Hindi films of 1980s and beyond, except about those that I have watched in the theatres or on Video sharing platforms. Between the late 1960s and early 1970s, I used to watch almost one film every week either on Saturdays or Sundays. My ‘over-exposure’ to films, mostly masala films, during this period created an aversion in me that discuraged me from watch theese films in the later years. Probably the theory of diminishing marginal utility was being applied to me. Over a period of time, my quota of watching films came down from once a week to 2-3 films a year which is still in force. Because of this, I have missed many entertaining and a few quality films released especially in 80s and 90s.

Hullo Atuldom

“Saagar” (1985) had a cast of Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Hasaan, Saeed Jaffery, Nadira, Sharat Saxena, Shafi Inaamdar, Satish Kaushik, Lilliput and Madhur Jaffery. It was directed by Ramesh Sippy and was produced by G P Sippy’s ‘Sippy Films’. It was a vehicle for Dimple’s comeback into Bollywood after her sabbatical brought on by marriage and family life. She was making a comeback after a gap of about 11 years. Her heroes were also her age group so they made an eye-pleasing team.

06/11/2020 – 35th Remembrance day of Sanjeev Kumar

The song I am presenting today as a tribute to Sanjeev Kumar, the versatile actor, comic, romantic, angry young man, character actor and sometime villainous, actor and above all the Thakur of ‘Sholay’, is from the film ‘Love and God’ (1986). Sanjeev Kumar was born on 9th July, 1938 as Harihar Jethalal Jariwala , at Surat. His filmography lists 171 films from 1960 to 1994. He was just 48 years old when he died in 1985, though he had been doing the roles of old man since 70’s. In ‘Aandhi’ he is the patient hotelier husband of Suchitra Sen, caught between the ambitious father Rehman and his dutiful daughter. I have seen that film 4 decades ago, it is time to refresh the memory.

“Aakhir Kyon”(1985) was produced and directed by J Omprakash. Now I realise why this movie title starts with the letter “A”. 🙂

The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Smita Patil, Rakesh Roshan, Tina Munim, Asrani, Sujit Kumar, Shubha Khote, Beena Bannerjee etc in it.

13/10/2020 – 33rd death anniversary of Kishore Kumar
——————————————————————————–

Today is that day when we all remember the phenomenal Kishore Kumar. I should have planned ahead, but could not do so. Firstly I am working on so many posts at once that it is becoming a blur what is done and what is not. Secondly, I was under the weather for the whole weekend, and antibiotics make me more blurred than anything else.
