O P Nayyar was an odd man out in Hindi film industry as a music director. He did not have the formal or informal training in the music. He did not undergo ‘apprenticeship’ under any music directors. He did not work with Lata Mangeshkar during his entire career as a music director. The top three star-actors of 1950s and 60s – Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor avoided him as a music director after working with him for one or two films. He did not work with Raj Khosla after his spate with him in ‘Ek Musaafir Ek Haseena’ (1962). His egoistic, stubborn, ‘calling spade a spade’ type of nature and some shades of eccentricities should have made him persona non grata in the Hindi film industry. Despite all these odds, he attained the status of one of the top music directors of Hindi films during 1950s and 1960s.

Hullo Atuldom
My family and some members of this world of Atulsongaday, which I like to refer to as Atuldom, know my love for a few actors from the Hindi Film World. Specially the actors who graced the silver screen in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Many of the actors of that period are in the 60 to 75/80+ age group. Actors Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Rekha, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Jaya Bhaduri, Dharmendra, some actors played character roles in that period etc. when they make an appearance on reality television I make it a point to see those episodes and on repeat if possible.

Hullo Atuldom
Day 1 of Sharad Navratr. Ashwin Navratr. Various names for the same festival, various ways to celebrate. I have received pictures of ‘Ghatta-sthapana’, ‘Devi Shailputri’, and of course the South Indian ‘Bomma Kolu’ (or Golu depending on your mother tongue). There is a lot of beauty in the manner in which we decorate our Gods and enjoy the festival. There are special offerings, poojas, archanas, bhajans and BHOJANS too (going by the name ‘Bhog’). Then there is the ever so colour raas garba in Western India, Gujarat and Maharashtra in particular. (May not be organised on a grand scale this year, as we are still worried about the consequences of the Pandemic. Grandeur can wait)

‘Anjaan’ (1941) was produced under the banner of Bombay Talkies and was directed by Amiya Chakraborty who made his debut as a director with this film. The star cast included Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar in the lead roles supported by Girish, P F Pithawala, V H Desai, Gulab, David, Fatty Prasad, Yusuf Suleiman, Master Suresh, Baby Madhuri, Rewashankar, Arun Kumar etc. For Devika Rani, it was her ‘comeback’ film after her last film ‘Durga’ (1939) and after the death of her husband, Himanshu Rai in 1940.
