This is one of the subjects that I longed to share. And since the subject is totally different from normal Hindi movie story topics viz. love stories, lost and found, family drama etc. I had to find relevant songs which would be either directly relevant to the subject or at least those which can easily convey the message that I intend to put in my write up/s. Though the first song that I selected came easily and that too during a real life experience when I was thinking of this topic. However the first song in this series is not that one but another song which I came across later when I was still working on the write up.

The songs that you have rendered, the legacy that you have left behind, it strums the strings of the heart and brings unfettered pleasure to the listening mind. The treasure is limitless, and yet limited. Limitless – that we can hear them over and over again, and the listening pleasure multiplies. And yes, limited too – for we know now, what we have is what it is; there will be additions to this treasure no more.

Today’s song is from an obscure, unknown film the early era – ‘Pratibha’ (1937).

Any industry, to develop into a profitable one, requires hard work by the pioneers. This applies totally to Hindi Film Industry in India. The original initiators of the film industry were not any rich people, but the industry took the seeds from ordinary, middle class people. They had no riches, but their zeal, dedication, ambition and desire to achieve goals overtook their poverty and they toiled and moiled to raise the required finance for their projects. We all know about  the great Dadasaheb Phalke, who staked everything he owned to achieve his goals and became a name to remember for ever. In this endeavour, he was not alone. There was one more person from Kolhapur, who took Phalke’s dream much ahead from silent to talkie films. His name is taken today with awe and respect by film historians. He was Baburao Painter.

And not just a heart; every heart sang. Every heart sang your songs, every heart sang along. There is that something so naturally attractive in your renditions, that every heart will brim up, and start to sing along. Ah, the magic of your voice. . .

Hullo Atuldom

The song with this post was liked by my mother at the time when it was a regular on the radio waves. Specially the lines about aate mein mitti, chaawal mein kankar behisaab hai. I suppose those were the times when people had to rely on groceries from ration-shops (kids of the new millennium will not know what the fuss is all about). I remember people used to stand in queues to buy common things like soaps, oils, and other essentials. Aah! Those were different times and a different way of living.

Today is the fifteenth remembrance day for Anil Biswas, one of the pioneering music directors of film industry in India. He passed away on 31st May in New Delhi, in the year 2003. My personal opinion is that wherever and whatever field we are we should have a purpose and we should contribute to enrich that surroundings we are, for however long or short a period we are there. It was not that I was so ‘intelligent’ since my younger days. The thinking is a result of my experience or you can say ‘mistakes’ 😊 which have taught me a lot and yes ‘age should not be the price one should pay for being experience’ (as Wise people say). But some people like me took years to realize the ‘world around’ and learn only from mistakes 😊

Today’s song is from the 1953 film ‘Raaj Ratan’.

Since childhood, we have been hearing stories of kings and queens. Most stories have a set pattern- good king, crooked vazier (minister), dutiful son, happy ending ! To go from start to finish, lot of masala used to be present, which actually made these stories interesting. We all knew the end, but it was the curiosity to know how it was achieved in the film. These stories had variations-

Atul ji, in many of his posts presenting Kishore Kumar songs from the eighties has mentioned this, that though the golden era of music was over by the beginning of eighties, still many gem songs also happened to be created in the decade of eighties, and particularly in case of Kishore Kumar songs. And one of the reasons for this may be because Kishore Kumar’s peak period started in 1970 and lasted till his death in 1987.

I am presenting one such song today which is from the 1984 movie ‘Farishta’. Movies by this name have also been released in earlier decades, notably in 1958 and 1968, when we had movies with the same title.
